Common Symptoms for Older Children

As your child’s mouth changes, so will the signs of lip and tongue-tie. In some ways, it may actually be easier to identify these conditions in older children since they can tell you directly that something is wrong (although they probably won’t know exactly what the underlying problem is). Common symptoms include:

  • Having trouble biting and chewing solid foods, or being unusually picky about what they eat
  • Gagging, choking, or vomiting particularly often
  • Problems with basic brushing and flossing
  • Developing a lisp or another speech impediment
  • Having trouble saying certain syllables that other children their age can say just fine
  • Behavioral issues
  • Suffering from cavities unusually often
  • A Large space developing between the front teeth

Common Symptoms for Adults

Some cases of lip and tongue tie are milder than others, and children may sometimes grow up without ever realizing that there’s anything unusual going on in their mouths. However, even if you’re an adult, the following symptoms could be a sign that lip and tongue tie are having an effect on your life:

  • You find that you have a hard time chewing steaks, apples, and other tougher foods; you may also find yourself choking unusually often while eating.
  • You have a speech impediment that doesn’t seem to get better with therapy.
  • You have trouble speaking clearly whenever you’re feeling tired or if you’re rushing through your speech.
  • You can’t brush properly because your lips get in the way of your teeth, leading to persistent issues with cavities or gum disease.
  • You are suffering from headaches, migraines, chronic neck or shoulder pain, or a TMJ disorder.
